Suraj Sharma is a highly motivated Senior Research Engineer at Applied Medical, with over 8 years of experience in medical device design and instrumentation. He is currently leading a team of research scientists in the Strategic Research Department, where he is responsible for turning potential ideas for laparoscopic surgical devices into working prototypes. Suraj's strengths include CAD designing, prototyping, leading small teams, and troubleshooting. He is also a 3D printing nerd, having designed more than 2000 parts and 3D printed more than 10,000 parts in the past 6 years. He is always keeping up with the latest trends in the 3D printing industry. Suraj is passionate about making a difference in the medical device industry and is always ready to try something outside his area of expertise. He loves discussing and working on moonshot ideas. He is looking to connect with people who share his passion for making a difference in the industry. In his current role, Suraj is leading a team of research scientists on multiple projects, including conducting research on novel laparoscopic surgical device ideas, product improvement, and bringing in new manufacturing processes. He is also responsible for CAD designing (SOLIDWORKS) and prototyping using various laboratory and machine shop tools available (4 types of 3D printers, laser cutter, etc.). He organizes and tests prototypes with consultant surgeons in animal and cadaver labs, evaluates gaps in current processes, and finds solutions for process improvement. As an Engineering Manager, he establishes project timelines and oversees project workflow. Some of Suraj's achievements in his current role include working on product improvement projects for most products on the company portfolio, working on several product ideas for the COVID-19 Pandemic out of which the Face shield and Test Swab went to market, and currently working on multiple projects to bring manufacturing processes in-house, which is expected to save the company upwards of $3.1M annually. Suraj holds a Master of Science (MS) in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from Vidyalankar Institute of Technology.
