At the Alloy Design, Deformation and Degradation Group (A3D) with Prof. Surendra Makineni 

• Worked on developing ternary Al-rare earth alloys for powertrain applications.
• Research involved vacuum arc casting and designing the heat treatment cycles to strengthen the as-cast alloys. 

Outcome: 
1. Eliminated undesirable microstructural features (needle-like secondary phases which could act as potential crack initiators) by modifying the composition and vacuum arc parameters (arc power, vacuum level, melting time, cast dimensions) 
2. Leveraged dual-ageing affect by addition of copper - achieved hardness higher than the strongest aluminum cast alloy (A357)

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India, and the Maharaja of Mysore. In 1886, Jamsetji Tata conceived of a university of science that would work for the benefit of India, and in 1898 created an endowment for establishing such an institution. The Government of India then took up the effort, and, in consultation with scientists in England and in India, decided to locate the Institute in Bengaluru, where the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, donated 372 acres of land. The Institute was formally vested in 1909, the foundation stone was laid in 1911, and the first batch of students started their studies in the same year.Over the last century, IISc has become the premier institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education in India. Beginning with 2 departments and 21 students in 1911, today IISc has 39 departments, units, or centres, 3500 students, and about 500 academic and scientific staff, supported by 600 administrative personnel. About 2200 students are in various PhD programs, almost 900 are enrolled for various Masters degrees, whereas about 400 are registered in the newly established, research oriented, four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) programme.In recent years, the Institute has vigorously promoted interdisciplinary research. New centres such as the CiSTUP, the Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber Physical Systems and a new Centre for Brain Research (funded by a large private endowment) are expected to conduct translational research in their respective areas, in order to better connect with industry and society. With the recent construction of modern buildings, acquisition of new research facilities, and induction of a large number of new faculty members, the Institute can look forward to an era of high productivity, increasing impact, and rising prominence in the world.

• Performed accelerated potentiodynamic polarization tests to assess the corrosion behaviour of 3D printed superaustenitic stainless steel in a simulated marine environment.

The findings from these experiments formed a part of my undergraduate thesis.

Centre for Laser Processing of Materials (CLPM)

• 3D printed Aluminum 6061 using Selective Laser Melting (SLM)
• Performed failure analysis of the printed alloy using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and electron microscopy. 

Outcome:
1. Achieved a volumetric densification of ~98% which is among the higher end of what’s reported in current literature.
2. Identified key parameters (oxygen concentration, laser power, speed, hatch spacing, layer thickness, scan strategy etc.) that have to be optimised to lower defects.

Charecterisation and testing used:

1. FE-SEM: Carl Zeiss Gemini 500 
2. Optodigitizer (to analyse the porosity)
3. Surface Roughness Tester 

Research implications:
1. Producing the automotive workhorse alloy - aluminum 6061 through additive manufacturing would decrease production times and enable complex geometries to be fabricated with ease (lesser tooling)
2. A realisation that parameter optimisation alone wouldn’t enable defect-free 3d printing of hard to print alloys of aluminum and copper with the existing LPBF machinery. Modifications to feed particle morphology is one plausible solution.

Worked with Antony Harison (Manager - BHEL Corporate R&D) on Non-destructive testing of additively manufactured alloys.

BHEL is manufacturing and marketing a wide range of products with the Involvement of its different units at different stages, particularly Jhansi products which are primarily marketed by Industry Sector and Regional Operations.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was established at Bangalore, India, by the Government of India under the Ministry of Defence in 1954 to

• Performed High Temperature Indentation tests on 3D printed steels and AlSi10Mg.
• Designed a tungsten carbide (WC) and Inconel indenters which can sustain high temperatures and loads for the indentation machine. 
• Established saftey load thresholds for indentation testing of various alloys (AlSi10Mg, Mg alloys, Incoloy 800) 

• Fabricated alumina crucibles using the slip-casting method. These crucibles were used for holding samples for oxidation tests at the Laboratory for Creep and Fatigue. 

• Oversaw the purchase of laboratory consumables and etchants for metallography.

• Performed damping analysis of aluminum 2219 alloy and fused deposition modelled PLA polymer using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyser (DMA) over a range of temperature.

• Performed literature analysis of lightweight alloys (Al, Mg and Ti) used in the automotive sector.
• Proposed light-weighting solutions which could potentially result in ~30% weight reduction using materials substitution.

Study Implications:
1. Fuel savings due to reduction in weight.
2. Substituting steel with lightweight alloys also comes with an increased complexity in metal production and forming which could negate the gains in fuel savings.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.
