Varun is a Software Development Engineer II at Amazon, where he is working on developing cloud backend software for a new Amazon Devices product. With 5.7 years of relevant experience, Varun has a strong background in software engineering, testing, backend development, and research science. Prior to joining Amazon, Varun worked at Qualcomm as a Senior Software Engineer, where he built internal software features and external API support for Snapdragon's DPU. He reduced power and performance costs by 10-15% for demanding high FPS use cases and led a redesign for more runtime optimized software architecture. He was also responsible for a feature that allowed OEMs to benefit from a higher yield of usable smartphone displays from their manufacturers. To ensure successful commercialization of the latest four generations of Snapdragon Premium Tier SoCs, Varun debugged complex issues related to HW programming, stability, memory management, performance regressions, power regressions, Google Compliance Test Suite, and Google Vendor Test Suite. Varun's past experience also includes working as an Undergraduate Researcher at the Storage Systems Research Center, where he developed Capsule, a client-side package to execute Oblivious Random Access Memory algorithms intended for data access pattern obfuscation in cloud storage. He assisted a PhD student with her ORAM algorithm development efforts and was approved by Prof. Ethan Miller (SSRC) and the Baskin School of Engineering for his successful undergraduate thesis project. Varun holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and completed his high school education at Monta Vista High School.
