He decreased GPU memory during training by 27% using 'Backpropagation with Low-Precision Activations' and implemented custom TF ops and layers for a full precision forward pass alongside a quantized backward pass. He also experimented with Bidirectional FPNs and swish activations for speed-performance tradeoffs. Varun has also worked as a Masters Capstone Project at Carnegie Mellon University, where he developed and implemented a CNN + Attention based system for detecting live humans in real-time audio. This system was able to differentiate live humans from recorded humans, TTS and non-speech sounds, and could detect live humans within ~7 seconds on ~94% of test calls.
