Victor Akinwande is a Machine Learning Researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, with a focus on developing Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI). With AI increasingly being embedded into society as a decision-making tool, Victor's research is aimed at ensuring that AI aligns with our values, is reliable, and safe. He develops algorithms to ensure the robustness of deep learning models, including detecting when such models are processing adversarial inputs. Additionally, he works on techniques for explainability and fairness of machine learning models, characterizing subgroups of a population that may be adversely affected by a predictive model. Victor is also investigating how to reliably draw causal conclusions from observational data in global health. He is the Founder Fellow at South Park Commons, a startup accelerator that provides a unique way for entrepreneurs to start high-growth, venture-backable startups. Previously, Victor was an OnDeck Founder Fellow at On Deck, where he connected with top tech talent and worked on scaling his startup. Before joining Carnegie Mellon University, Victor was a Research Engineer in AI Science at IBM Research Africa. There, he developed algorithms to ensure the robustness of deep learning models, worked on techniques for explainability and fairness of machine learning models, and investigated how to reliably draw causal conclusions from observational data in global health. Victor holds a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, where he is currently pursuing his degree. He also holds a Master's degree in Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Ilorin.
