Wilco Bonestroo is a highly skilled and motivated computer scientist, software engineer/developer, researcher, and teacher with a strong interest in applied computer science research, robotics, education, and human factors. With a background in technical computer science (MSc), teaching mathematics (MSc), and cognitive psychology (PhD), Wilco is a practical engineer who is passionate about creating incredible technical solutions. Currently, Wilco works as a researcher in the Mechatronics research group at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, where he focuses on software engineering and artificial intelligence for robots (edge AI). He has a special interest in open-source software, such as Linux, Robot Operating System (ROS), and Keras/TensorFlow. Wilco's mission is to apply his skills and knowledge to create wonderful technical solutions and teach young engineers to do the same. He believes that engineers should have applied research skills, common sense, and a getting-things-done mindset. Wilco's specialities include software engineering, (embedded) system development, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, human-computer interaction, knowledge representation, interaction design, self-directed learning, and computer-supported learning environments. He is proficient in programming languages such as Java, Android, C++ (Win32 and Qt, Robot Operating System (ROS)), C, Jennic, Arduino, C#, PHP, ASP (VBscript and Jscript), VB, Miranda, Maple, and Flex (AS3). He is also experienced in working with databases such as Oracle, MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL, and HTML. Wilco has worked as an Associate Lector in Software Engineering for Cyber-Physical Systems at Saxion since 2016. He focuses on software development for cyber-physical systems, such as robots, and researches how traditional software engineering techniques can be applied to embedded systems. He is also interested in raising awareness about the societal impact of developing "smart" systems. Wilco has also worked as a researcher at Saxion's Ambient Intelligence group, where he supervised several student projects and conducted research on applied estimation, tracking, and multi-sensor data fusion, user experience design, indoor positioning using inertial sensors combined with localization based on ZigBee wireless networks, and automated ECG analysis and interpretation.
