William Johnston is a software engineer with a passion for solving human problems using software when reasonable. He is a student of best practice and strives to find the cleanest, most maintainable way of solving an issue. William has expertise in Object Oriented design, unit and integration testing, and implementing continuous integration. He is the most skilled in Ruby, but he has used PHP, SQL, Perl, Javascript, Java, and a variety of other languages. William maintains an open source project to streamline LetsEncrypt CA TLS certificates on WebFaction hosting, and he has contributed code and documentation to Capistrano. William has experience managing an active directory network, provisioning systems, and supervising/planning a departmental budget. He is the Engineering Manager at drip, where he works with the product team to define the customer problem being solved and how they want to solve it. He then works with the engineers to scope out the specific solution and deliver it. William has also worked as a Tech Lead and Senior Ruby on Rails Developer at drip, maintaining applications in Ruby and Golang, dealing with the scaling issues that come with a growth startup. He has also led teams to ship new features, working with product to plan sprints, architect features, and winnow them down to ship things quickly. William has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Computer Science from Thomas Edison State University and a degree in Music from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He has relevant experience of 8.62 years and is a Senior Software Engineer with skills in SQL, Integration, Ruby, CI/CD, test, Javascript, PHP, and Java.
